United States Negotiations with Taliban
United States Negotiations with Taliban - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday said the United States and the Taliban are discussing settlement of the war in Afghanistan. The statement was the first official confirmation of U.S. involvement in the negotiations.

Karzai said Afghanistan's push toward peace negotiations have not reached the stage where the government and the rebels met, but their representatives have been in touch.

"Peace talks are underway with the Taliban. Foreign military and especially the United States itself will go forward with these negotiations," Karzai said in a speech in Kabul.

"The peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban movement has not been based on a specific agenda or a physical meeting, there is a new contact."

United States. Embassy in Kabul declined comment.

Karzai was speaking a day after the UN Security Council split the UN sanctions list for the Taliban and alQaeda in two. According to the delegates, it can help push the Taliban into talks about a peace agreement in Afghanistan.
