Portalos Tech News : Apple still trying to land films, TV shows for iCloud

Executive Summary About Apple still trying to land films, TV shows for iCloud By CNET ( Greg Sandoval )

Apple still trying to land films, TV shows for iCloud.
Feature films could be part of Apple's iCloud launch next week.

In the past several weeks, Apple executives have stepped up their attempts to convince some of the major Hollywood film studios to issue licenses that would enable Apple to store its customers' movies on the company's servers, two sources close to the negotiations told CNET. Apple began discussing a cloud service with the studios over a year ago.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Apple announced today that next Monday, the start of the company's Worldwide Developers Conference, it will unveil the iCloud, a long-anticipated service that will enable users store and access their digital media from Apple's servers via Web-connected devices. The cloud is the term used to describe when consumers rely on third parties instead of their own PCs for computing tasks and this is where digital entertainment is supposedly headed. CNET reported that Apple has licensing deals with three of the top four record labels and is closing in on reaching an agreement with the fourth, as well as the large music publishers.

Apple is expected to help take cloud services out of the world of high-tech enthusiasts, the so-called early adopters, and introduce them to the mainstream.

The talks between Apple and the studios are ongoing but Apple has run into several problems, including one that could prevent it from offering flicks from at least three of the big film studios, the sources said.

Exclusive window
The so-called HBO window or HBO blackout, as it is known in the film industry, refers to an exclusive distribution relationship that the cable network has with three of the top six film studios: Warner Bros. Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and NBC Universal.

When a movie from one of the participating studios is aired on HBO, the cable network's electronic-distribution rights require other outlets to halt sales or distribution of the title. Conceivably, this would prevent cloud services from streaming movies to customers during the blackout period.

Telling consumers that they won't have access to movies they store in the cloud for certain periods will make such features a tough sell.

But there's a difference between selling a movie during HBO's exclusive window and storing a copy of a film that was bought outside of the window and giving the owner access to their property. That's what Time Warner, parent company of HBO and Warner Bros., is trying to hash out right now, the sources said. Time Warner CEO

Cell Phones Radiation Can Cause Cancer

Cell Phones Radiation Can Cause Cancer
Do you use a cell phone? Most people do. In fact, they have pretty much become something that no one can live without. No matter where you go, someone is talking into their cell phone, or has it shoved up against their head, listening. Unfortunately, those who use cell phones may be getting a little more than they bargain for. Cell phones emit something called electromagnetic radiation. This is a low, pulsing energy that can actually interfere with our cells.

Different studies have been done that link this radiation to brain tumors, cancer, and other health conditions. In fact, in one study done with mice, the incidence of cancer and tumors was higher when the mice were exposed to electromagnetic radiation than when they were not. Many other studies have been done, and they all point to the fact that cell phone radiation causes cancer and other problems with our bodies. The interesting thing to note is that when you hold the phone to your ear, the electromagnetic radiation can reach up to the middle of your brain. This puts your brain at risk! This is why there have been numerous brain tumors that are present on the side of the brain that gets exposed. That is scary news.

So, what can you do? You have become accustomed to using your cell for everything from business to staying in touch with the people you love. You are not going to give it up very easily. On the other hand, you don't want brain tumors either. Well, here are some tips you can use to protect yourself and your family.

o Try using a hands free accessory. While you can talk on the phone just like usual, you will not have the it too close to your body. It allows you the convenience of a cell phone but it reduces some of the risk of electromagnetic radiation and its effects.

o Another thing that you can do is purchase a buffer that attaches to your cell phone. These are very helpful, and made out of all natural things. They pulse at the low level that electromagnetic radiation does, and the energy they put out helps neutralize the radiation.

o Don't allow children on the phone for more than a very short period of time. This will keep them from being exposed to electromagnetic radiation in large amounts or for longer periods of time. This may reduce their risks of developing brain tumors or other problems.

o There is also a product that you can place in a room of your home which does the same thing as the attachment for the cell phone, however it works for all of the products that emit electromagnetic radiation. There is a certain amount of area that it covers as well.

Doing small things like this can help you protect your family from cell phone radiation and other types of electromagnetic radiation.

cell phones and radiation

In a report issued today, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is an arm of the WHO, said it now lists mobile phone use in the same category as lead. Officially, cell phone radiation is listed as a "carcinogenic hazard."

Until today, the WHO's IARC had said that there were no adverse health effects from the use of cell phones. The wireless industry, including the CTIA lobbying group, and the Federal Communications Commission and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have also long maintained that cell phones are safe.

The CTIA, the wireless industry trade association in the U.S., was quick to point out that the WHO's IARC did not say that cell phones definitely cause cancer.

"IARC conducts numerous reviews and in the past has given the same score to, for example, pickled vegetables and coffee," John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA, said in a statement. "This IARC classification does not mean cell phones cause cancer. Under IARC rules, limited evidence from statistical studies can be found even though bias and other data flaws may be the basis for the results."

The group also emphasized that the IARC's determination was based on reviewed published studies and was not the result of new scientific research.

"The IARC working group did not conduct any new research, but rather reviewed published studies," Walls continued. "Based on previous assessments of the scientific evidence, the Federal Communications Commission has concluded that '[t]here's no scientific evidence that proves that wireless phone usage can lead to cancer.' The Food and Drug Administration has also stated that '[t]he weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phones with any health problems.'"

In response to Tuesday's news, an FCC spokesman said, "The FCC currently requires cell phones to meet safety standards based on the advice of federal health and safety agencies. We support the IARC recommendation for more research to clearly identify any potential health risks and, as appropriate, consider whether further actions may be required."

The new determination from the WHO's IARC was established at a meeting in France where a team of 31 scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, considered peer-reviewed studies about the safety of cell phones. The team said that it had found enough evidence to consider exposure to cell phone radiation as "possibly carcinogenic to humans."
