NASA To End Spirit Robot Mission On Mars
After more than a year since lost contact with Spirit, Mars robotic explorers, NASA finally decided to surrender. As of May 25, 2011, the space agency had confirmed that they will end all communication with the robot's plan.
This step also ensures that the end of the robotic mission that has lasted for 7 years.
Previously, NASA hopes that spring is coming soon on the planet that will create a spirit able to recharge the batteries via solar panels which have to be able to make radio contacts. But apparently, the robot was damaged beyond repair.
For information, at the last winter that hit Mars, Spirit forced to take the task in very cold temperatures.
"It seems that now we can only see that the Spirit is a small cruiser and recalled a number of success and achievement which he has achieved during his life," said David Lavery, a NASA executive, as quoted by Engadget, May 26, 2011.
Spirit spirit would continue to live, but what about the continuation of NASA's mission on Mars?
Lavery said, the current Opportunity, NASA's other Mars explorers who served since 2004 and still in good condition. Late in 2011, he will be accompanied by Curiosity, the latest generation of robotic explorers to use nuclear power, to investigate whether Mars ever accommodate life.
Meanwhile, the network of NASA spacecraft will also continue to listen to signals from the Spirit, just in case if any unusual conditions that make the Spirit again able to transmit radio signals.
