Apple iPhone 5

Apple may not comment on rumor, speculation, or future plans, but it does inform its partners of what to expect in the near future. And it seems AT&T has now been told there will be no June or July iPhone 5 launch.

An AT&T customer noticed that his eligibility for a smartphone upgrade had moved back 5 months without any notice from AT&T as to why.

Surprisingly, the customer rep he spoke to at AT&T had what seems to be some definite information regarding the launch, or lack thereof, of the iPhone 5.

The reason given to the customer was that Apple “has informed” AT&T that there will be no new iPhone launch in June or July. We don’t know, but if there are any AT&T customers reading this then check your eligibility date.

As time passes it becomes ever more certain a summer launch for the iPhone 5 isn’t going to happen. Apple is now shipping a modified version of the iPhone 4 with the name 4S to game developers. We’ve also heard the iPhone 5 could be a radical re-design that raises the bar again for smartphone looks.

iPhone 5 (or the iPhone 5G, as some are calling it) rumours are flying thick and fast already.

This fits with Apple's established rhythm of iPhone releases, with new models appearing in late June or early July each year. On 20 April 2011, it emerged that the iPhone 5 release date may now be September 2011 rather than June/July. iPhone 5 form factor

The Wall Street Journal reported that: "Apple is also developing a new iPhone model, said people briefed on the phone. Of course, since the iPhone 3G was followed by the 3GS it's possible the new iPhone won't be a total refresh and we'll see an iPhone 4S (or iPhone 4GS) before an iPhone 5.

On 22 March 2011, China Times also reported that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display.

Rumours that we covered on 3 May 2011, suggest that there may even be two versions of the new iPhone: a 'standard' iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5 'pro'. A cheaper, smaller iPhone 5 - an iPhone nano

The Economic Daily News is reporting that white iPhone 5 glass is being shipped, with a supplier called Wintek being the sole touch panel vendor for the white iPhone.

UPDATE: On 24 February 2011, we reported that an Apple patent has revealed an e-wallet icon on the iPhone homescreen. This adds credence to the rumour that iPhone 5 will feature NFC.

So perhaps we'll have to wait for iPhone 6 for that.

On 22 March 2011 China Times reported that the new iPhone will include an NFC chip.
