The number of casualties is feared to rise. Because, up until Thursday morning local time, rescue teams are still looking for people who are trapped in collapsed buildings.
According to news agency Associated Press, the earthquake occurred near the town of Lorca. Two earthquakes occurred so that an interval of two hours destroying many buildings.
"I felt a strong jolt, followed by a lot of noise. I was really very scared," said resident Lorca, Juani Avellanada, quoted by the daily El Pais.
Another resident, Juana Ruiz, claiming his home was torn in two when hit by an earthquake. "All the furniture falling," said Ruiz.
This is an earthquake with the largest number of deaths in Spain in the period more than 50 years. Earlier, in 1956, an earthquake in Granada, Spain, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others.
