Bangka Strait separates Sumatra and Bangka Island, while the Gaspar Strait separates the island of Bangka and Belitung islands. In the northern part of this province are the South China Sea, the southern part of the Java Sea and in the eastern part of Kalimantan Island which is separated from Belitung Island by Karimata Strait.
Bangka Belitung Islands Province formerly part of South Sumatra, but became its own province of Banten and Gorontalo together in 2000. Bangka Belitung Islands Province was established pursuant to Act No. 27 of 2000 on the Establishment of Bangka Belitung Islands Province November 21, 2000, which consists of the District of Bangka, Belitung regency and City Pangkalpinang. In 2003, pursuant to Act No. 5 of 2003 dated January 23, 2003 conducted regional divisions with the addition of 4 districts of the Western Pacific, Central Bangka, Bangka Belitung South and East. Bangka Belitung Islands Province is a division of territory of South Sumatra Province.
